Whats the max number of players a server can hold?

as title says.. just wondering, what is the max number of players can connect to Arcadia without it being laggy and playable? so far i have seen around 190 players and the play was smooth.. can it do 1000 or more?

Number of players actually causes extremely little in the way of load on the server. The biggest drain on a server is number of mobs.

I think there's a tendency with the Delphi files to limit connections to 2000 per server (set back in year 2000). Not sure if that's just an arbitrary number or had some testing involved. We've comfortably had ~500 *active* users on in the past so there's no reason to expect any issues going higher.

Player activity is important because as Zade says there's not much difference between a player and a monster (there's ca 180k or so monsters in game during events) however certain functions go to sleep until a player wakes them up - which is why you see Guards clearing safezone when you are the first player to arrive on the map. An afk player is not performing the calculations that a Wizard killing a 50+ lure will be doing.

The performance is balanced also so that players take more priority over resources. This is why "monster lag" becomes a thing, you are not feeling the effects of the low resources because they get passed on to the monsters.

It is also possible to connect servers (which is what Euro did) - they had Bichon and Mongchon on two different servers, hence you took a little while longer to move from Serpent Valley to Mongchon and pets would respawn (rather than tele). You could talk, group, interact as usual but you were technically connected to another server. I am sure that was important 20 years ago on single core machines but not something that would improve much for us now.

Interesting, I never knew that
